From analogue to digital with the HUMAX DTT-4100

The companion for digital terrestrial testing, up to the switch-off of analogue repeaters and over...

Presentation

Display HUMAX DTT-4100 As the latest products of HUMAX (CI-5100X, PVR-8000, etc.), the finishing of the decoder is in silver (silver) with a slide that shiny (as can be seen from the photos) extends across the width of the device, from a size slightly smaller brother DTT-4000. Display HUMAX DTT-4100 Packaging (in blue, classic HUMAX) we find, in addition to the decoder, the remote control (pictured below), a scart cable (finally they decided to include it), a pair of batteries for the remote control, a telephone cable plug-plug and finally the manual (in English and Italian).

Analog Channel "All Music" HUMAX DTT-4100

Among the main differences with his brother, is its ability to store 1000 channels (instead of 200), and create lists promisque of analog and digital channels (in the photo the program "All Music" in analog from Rome). This peculiarity makes it particularly interesting in this period of digital terrestrial testing: it is practical to use, because in the transition period up to the switch-off (off) of analogue repeaters will be, for many, useful to quickly switch from analogue to digital (especially in areas still not covered by the signal).

A look inside

Internal HUMAX DTT-4100 At first power on, after loading the Loader a2.53, you go directly to the automatic channel search. In a few minutes he can tune all TV channels receivable by land, from the channels in the VHF band (A, B, H2 ...) to those in the UHF (21 ÷ 69). In one pass stores both analog and digital channels (COFDM). Although the specifications seem to believe that has 2 tuners (tuner) looking inside, it turns out that in reality there is only one tuner that performs both functions of analogue and COFDM demodulation.
Besides this, we can clearly see that the slot-smart-card is installed on the motherboard (dark square in the bottom right of the photo to the right), the card will then be inserted with the contacts downwards.

Heart HUMAX DTT-4100 Watching even more closely, by analyzing the memories, on the left we find 4 chip of Samsung K4S281632F which according to the manufacturer are 2M x 16bit x 4 banks SDRAM (64 MBytes as stated).
At the center of the heart of the system, a RISC microprocessor of Conexant 32-bit, the CX22490 with various features, such as: Video Decoder MPEG-2 MP @ ML, Audio Decoder mpeg-1 / mpeg-2 and Dolby Digital, De-Multiplexer DVB, DVB decoder, etc.
On the right is the Flash memory 64Mbit (4Mbit x 16, or 8Mbyte) in this decoder, especially M28W640EC of STMicroelectronics, but in others I found TE28F640 of Intel.

An interesting application

But let's look at a more practical point of view: for lovers at Home-Theater, those who use instead of common Televisions, Plasma screens, LCDs or projectors, will find it very usefull the possibility of withdrawing a RGB or S-Video signal Video, also by the analog TV signals and the possibility to manage the second exit (VCR) so completely independent of the first, or in Composite Video or S-Video irrespective (as you can see from the photo).

Control A / V

You can pick up the Dolby Digital Optics from the rear, and set the type of screen 4: 3 or 16: 9, automatically or manually... well, ready to be added to our system HT, although there will still be a lot to wait for, by broadcasters, content worthy of the name.

The use of daily

Remote HUMAX DTT-4100 The graphics of the menu is attractive (the rest had to take advantage of the 64Mb of memory), the exchange rate channel... worthy of the brand HUMAX, time and program information are at hand ... the rest is at the mercy of MHP (ie the issuers): As soon as you switch to a channel with interactivity (MHP), the decoder reads all applications submitted and, depending on the service, come overlay messages on possible uses for the colored buttons.

The remote control (pictured left) is full of keys, maybe a little too classic than extravagant forms that we usually see, in return, however, includes all instrument functions in an orderly manner, with groups of keys separated by small gaps The first group of commands (as above) on / off, source, numbers and letters; the middle one (under your thumb) reports in a circular the main navigation functions and information; Finally keys for teletext on the TV. The look is very reminiscent of the series "Amadeus Symphony" of ruwido (maybe it is made from them).

Finally, if you want to go beyond the digital television, all that remains is to try the four games included in the software: Egg Egg, Sea Battle, Rail Wiz and Bug's Opera.
